Drought Deepens and Continues

"Epic Drought, It could get worse", "Drought among worst in 1,400 years" - Shaun McKinnon, The Arizona Republic

"Tarahumara life is bleak as hunger deaths mount" - Julie Watson, World, The Associated Press

We will need food relief transports
for the next four-five years, at least.

If you live in the southwestern US just take a look out of your window or pick up the local newspaper and see the obvious signs of a region devastated by drought. Even the national parks and forests are facing complete closure due to drought conditions causing fire dangers.Tarahumara devastated corn field

Now imagine that your main source of food comes from the parched earth of our surrounding desert environment. This is the situation the Tarahumara's face.

During their most recent dance tours, the Tarahumara's raised significant funds to help purchase a major food delivery this July, August and October in anticipation of a possible crisis like this.Food donations Our goal is to purchase again as many tons of food as possible at this time to provide the additional help needed.

There are planned to be at least one, and possibly two deliveries to five villages in July, August and October this year.

Any help you can provide in this midyear effort would be greatly appreciated and we will forward thorough documentation of the results of this effort.

Matachine Dance Tour March 2003

Past tours provided a great success in being able to purchase food. There was also an excellent response from some of our new sponsors in Pheonix, Prescott, Sodona and Tucson.

The public really showed enthusiasm for the program so we hope to do it again next year. We are looking for sponsors again in Phoenix, Prescott, Sodona, Tucson and Silver City. If you have any ideas about potential sponsors, please contact us as soon as possible. Prior planning is critical to the success of this project.
